VLOGGING WHILE TRAVELING
A pre-flight brain dump.
We're currently at Zurich Airport. Our gate will be shown in 30 minutes, so I figured I had some time to get a quick blog post in.
Yesterday, I had wanted to blog about packing, but I ended up playing "Demon Bluff" almost all day. That game is addicting! I'll write about it soon, perhaps over the course of this trip.
I like to update my NOW page when I'm away to reflect my travels. The only planned blog post during this trip would be my Sunday weekly. Other than that, I usually don't have the energy to write daily entries after a long day of sightseeing/walking.
For this trip, I decided to bring my Osmo Pocket because V said I should "practice" for my documentary. I had wanted to take a break, but I think she's right. Art never sleeps! And I had so much fun editing my Interlaken trip that I know I'd probably regret not documenting this one.
These recordings end up becoming some sort of external memory drive.
While I remember general or impactful moments of a trip, filming allows me to preserve the small details that I would've otherwise forgotten. For example, I never documented my interactions with Daniel before the Interlaken video, and seeing our dynamic made me laugh and reminds me to appreciate my travel buddy.
Normally I start recording the night before and document the process, but this time I got lazy and decided to start recording once the plane begins to land. I also fixed the sync on my mic, so it should pick up the sound now.
I still have two trips I need to edit: Paris and Bali. That's why I thought I wouldn't bring my Osmo Pocket. However, I'll always have time to edit once the trip is over, but the experience is once-in-a-lifetime! Sure, I will mostly likely visit the Netherlands again, but the experience won't be exactly the same.
Speaking of, I've been reading Alexander's trip to the Netherlands because we're going to the same places. I thought I'd get some tips, but my agenda's already so packed now that I'm simply enjoying his daily blog posts. It's also cool to see how two people can go to the same exact places and have completely different experiences.
When I film I tend to forget to take pictures, especially of my food. So I gotta remember to do that. I don't like to live behind the camera though and not experience what's in front of me. When I vlog, I try to be as minimal and efficient as possible (I'm also shy about filming in public). Sometimes, I wish I could be a shameless vlogger and film like nobody's watching (or like everyone else is just an extra). But I also find that behavior annoying, and I don't wanna be that person.
I've accepted that content creation is not a viable pursuit, but I still enjoy filming my travels. I want to practice the techniques I've learned from my documentary research, so it would be cool to edit with different goals in mind. For example, how would Werner Herzog present my trip to Netherlands? I'm guessing he wouldn't vlog about it.
