PRETEND TYPEWRITER

I'M NEW HERE

Hello, Bear Blog.

I've missed writing so I started a Substack a few months ago. It was going just fine, until I discovered the "Notes" feature.

Rewind back to October 13, 2025, when I wrote this post on Substack. I've been a sufferer of the doomscroll for YEARS now, ever since Instagram decided to further capitalize on our weak minds. Enough was enough, and I now have a 30 minute time limit for the app, which works out well. I use it all up first thing in the morning, catch up on friends, a bit of news, some memes, and I'm ready to start my day. (Not best practice, I know, but it works for me right now).

AND THEN I DOWNLOADED SUBSTACK TO MY PHONE AND DISCOVERED NOTES.

It was fine at first. Notes is Substack's version of Twitter. I was a casual viewer until my algorithm caught up with me and I was back in doomscroll hell. I tried the 30 minute timer but it somehow didn't work. It felt like much longer, and I finally just deleted the app from my phone altogether.

Which made me wonder whether Substack really was the right platform for me? I just want a place to write. What I liked about Substack was that subscribers get my posts sent to their emails, so my sister can finally read my musings since she doesn't have a social media presence.

However, like a lot of people these days, I'm missing the early days of the internet. I miss Livejournal. I'm thinking about ditching my music streaming apps and going back to ye olde iPod.

The people crave an analog life! I've always wanted a typewriter but I could never deal with the logistics of it. So maybe a Pretend Typewriter is what I need.
